How Do You Know When a Tree is Dead?
If you love the trees on your property, you likely observe them on a regular basis and provide any necessary care for them the best you can to keep them healthy. As you take in their beauty, you may come to notice that something is amiss and realize that, sometimes even the most diligent care cannot always save a tree from dying. It is important to know when a tree is dead or dying so that it can be removed safely before it becomes a hazard. If you notice any of the issues below, we recommend calling the arborists at Lewis Lawn & Tree Service so we can perform a tree inspection and let you know if the tree can be saved or if it should come down in the near future.
No leaves or buds: A healthy tree should have leaves or buds present during the growing season. If a tree has no leaves or buds, this could indicate that it is dead or dying.
Brittle branches: A dead tree's branches will be dry, brittle, and easily breakable. In contrast, a live tree's branches will be flexible and pliable.
Cracks in the trunk: If a tree has deep cracks or splits in the trunk, it may be a sign that it is dead or dying.
Fungi growth: Fungi such as mushrooms growing on the base of a tree or along its trunk could indicate that the tree is dead or dying.
Peeling bark: If a tree's bark is peeling off in large sections, it may be a sign that the tree is dead or dying.
Leaning: A tree that is leaning heavily or has fallen over completely may be dead or dying.
Hollow trunk: A tree with a hollow trunk could indicate that the tree is dead or dying, as the internal structure of the tree has decayed and weakened.
Lack of response to pruning: If a tree does not respond to pruning or does not produce new growth, it may be dead or dying.
It is important to note that some trees may show some of these signs and still be alive. It is best to consult with an arborist to determine the best course of action when dealing with a tree that is showing signs of decline.
